Treatment of Acne Scars

There are several options available for the treatment of acne scarring in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad in Pakistan. All of these three metropolitans have some of the best qualified, top dermatologists to treat acne scarring. Treatment is usually done depending upon the type of scars. Fractionated laser resurfacing is the latest in the treatment of acne scarring. It is done with Mosaic/Fraxel Laser, which is a very safe and effective modality for the treatment of acne scarring. An average of 3 to 5 sessions are required for a reasonable improvement. Sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. There is 10% to 15% improvement with each session on an average. The treatment has no down time. Patients experience redness and swelling for 24 hours, which is then replaced with a bronzed appearance, resembling a sun burn. Patients can apply make up and go out wearing sun protection.

FILLERS:

The depressed scars are a result of damaged collagen in the dermis. These craters can be filled up with Hyaluronic Acid, commercially available as skin fillers in the market.

SUB-SCISSION:

The skin overlying a depressed scar is fibrosed i.e. attached to the underlying skin by scar tissue. This scar tissue can be broken down to release this attached skin. This is called sub-scission of acne scars and makes the scars look less depressed.

INTRA LESIONAL STEROIDS:

Keloids are raised scars. They can be flattened by giving intra lesional steroids.

Treatment of mild acne scarring can be done with Microdermabrasion and chemical peels.
